Been There Mom

Introduction:  I have known BeenThereMom for more than several years now through her work in assisting in the management of an on-line health community, serving those who suffer from depression and their loved ones.  Along with her hard earned knowledge about topics ranging from PTSD to mood disorders, BeenThereMom also knows a lot about raising a child with special needs.  She is an excellent resource and we are very happy to have her join us as a guest blogger.

Thank you for being here!

All about BeenThereMom in her own words...

I’m the mother of an adult son who is on the autism spectrum and who is also developmentally disabled.  His experiences with the schools and social services systems were probably a bit different from what is available today, but we lived through a lot of frustrating situations to get to the point where he’s at today, which is living independently in his own apartment and holding down a full-time job with the Federal government.  He didn’t get an autism diagnosis until he was in middle school and being treated for clinical depression.  He suffered frontal lobe damage at some point either before or during birth, so our main focus was on the developmental disabilities.  We’ve since learned that he has so many strengths and abilities and I feel grateful for all those who have helped him achieve a greater degree of independence than I ever thought would be possible.

Grandma Kathleen

Introduction:  I met Grandma Kathleen through a homeschooling listserv called Aut-2B-Home.  She has been providing support to other caregivers for many years by sharing her own experiences in teaching her grandson who is on the autism spectrum.  Grandma Kathleen is amazing for many reasons. She is using her retirement years to teach her grandson a wide array of specialized subjects including marine biology.  Grandma Kathleen has also been published in number of scientific journals and has published an article a few years ago in S I Focus (sensory integration) called "Why Tommy Can't Comply." This article was also published as a chapter in the book, Insights into Sensory Issues for Professionals by Kathleen Morris, MS, CCC/SLP.   Prior to her ventures into homeschooling Grandma Kathleen has lived quite a remarkable life as an Episcopal priest.

Welcome!  Thank you so much for joining our site.

All about GrandmaKathleen in her own words...

I'm a retired Episcopal priest with a PhD, Cornell, Ecology. Also worked as a Research Associate in the Nutrition Division at Cornell for 6.5 years, pastored several parishes, have done some writing, founded a soup kitchen and a spirituality center, and for the last 7+ years have been home educating my grandson who is diagnosed with high-functioning autism. I still fill in occasionally for pastors who are on vacation, or bless the animals on St. Francis' day.

Dr. Lawrence Green MD Dermatology

Introduction:  I (MomtoMax) was first introduced to Dr. Green on-line when I became the lead writer and Community Leader for both the Skin Care and Skin Cancer communities on Health Central.  Each month Dr. Green would voluntarily answer reader questions about skin health ranging from discussions about how to treat boils to detecting the warning signs of melanoma skin cancer.  Dr. Green is well known for his medical expertise on skin related conditions and especially acne and psoriasis.  He has been practicing dermatology for over twenty years and has a practice in the Washington DC area.

Dr. Green has graciously agreed to help us answer some commonly asked questions about skin care related to caring for children with special needs.
